Obituary

Grace Helen Wilson Porter, of Peach Blow Road Cato, passed away October 29, 2016. Grace was born November 14, 1927, in Fairport, NY, to Herman and Edith Wolf Wilson. She grew up in Spring Lake and attended Port Byron School. At age 16 she moved to Penfield so she could work at Kodak, where she assembled equipment for the Navy during World War II. She graduated from Penfield High School in 1945.
Grace met Gilbert Porter in Spring Lake in 1946. They courted for two years and were married April 24, 1948. The Porters ran the family farm on Peach Blow Road for many years.
Grace was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She made beautiful cakes for weddings and other special occasions for many years. In later years she enjoyed getting together with friends to sing and play music. Her group called themselves "Friday Night Special" because they got together on Friday nights at the Porter Camp on Duck Lake to practice. Grace sang, played the auto harp, accordion, and piano. The group entertained at several nursing homes.
Family was Grace's main focus and she loved spending all the time she could with them. She was a great cook and baker. All who entered her home were welcomed and well fed.
For the last year Grace has lived at the Commons in Auburn. Thank you to the folks on the 4th floor for their care and support.
Grace was predeceased by Gilbert, her husband of 68 years, on June 15, 2016, as well as her siblings Carl, and Chester Wilson, Edith Criss and Clara Waterman, and her sons-in-law David Sova and Dale Dawson.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan Sova Powers (Mike), and Barbara Dawson O'Connell (Daniel), as well as her grandchildren, Scott and Ryan Sova, James and Jason Dawson, and Kimberly Dawson Crandon. She also had 9 great-grandchildren, Carter, Haylay, Autumn, Kaydee, Kaela, Kara, and James Sova, and Julie and Noah Crandon.
