Fair Haven

Obituary

Eleen Mary Williams, 74, of Fair Haven, NY, passed away peacefully in her home on August 10, 2024, surrounded by her family. Eleen was born on May 17,1950, in Sodus, NY, to Donald Schumaker and Helen (Taber) Schumaker of Red Creek, NY. Eleen, was a lifelong resident of Red Creek and graduated from Red Creek High School in 1968. As a young woman, she worked as a bank teller, in Red Creek, at Oneida National Bank. Eleen's kind nature and impeccable work ethic, not only led to her managing three bank branches within the community, but it was also the beginning of her diligent service to Red Creek and her fellow residents. Through her strong participation in Rotary, Historical Society, and the Food Cupboard, Eleen helped raise money at local and charitable events to help build and improve the quality of life for her beloved community.  You could regularly find Eleen serving popcorn at the Fair Haven band concerts, helping at community Easter egg hunts, yearly park and beach cleanups, and volunteering at various festivals and celebrations. Her most recent project that she helped organize and fundraise for was Mural Mania. The first mural was painted on the side of the Opera House Cafe in Red Creek. Soon surrounding areas followed suit and now the beauty of these murals can be appreciated by residents and visitors alike. Eleen met the love of her life, Stephen Williams, in second grade. They became high school sweethearts, married at the age of 18, and raised two daughters together in Red Creek. As a mother, Eleen gave selflessly and loved without limits or conditions. You could always find her in the bleachers cheering on her girls at sporting and school events, still in heels and hose because she raced from her job to get there. She tucked love notes in their lunches, handmade every Halloween costume, made a hot breakfast every morning, and would break affectionately into song mid-sentence. As a wife, Eleen's heart overflowed with devotion and adoration for her husband, Stephen. Through the good and not so good, Eleen's patience and unshakable commitment was the backbone, not only to her marriage, but to her family. In 2017 Stephen and Eleen sold their home in Red Creek and built the home of their dreams in Fair Haven, NY., where they would spend their summers enjoying their view of Little Sodus Bay and sitting around a fire singing to the songs Stephen would strum out on his guitar. Eleen often said, "There is no place as beautiful as Fair Haven, NY."  In the winter, they would snowbird at Manasota Key, Florida, where strong friendships had developed due to their kindness and fun-loving spirits. Eleen was always a lady in any given situation. She was the finest example of grace and compassion. She showed her community that we were put on this earth to serve and to leave things better than we found them. And that is exactly what she did for anyone who was fortunate enough to have known her. Eleen, you will be missed. Eleen is preceded in death by her husband Stephen Jeffrey Williams, her parents Donald Schumaker and Helen (Taber) Schumaker, and her brother Wayne Schumaker. She is survived by her brother Gary Schumaker and his wife Joy (Bracket) Schumaker, her sister Judy Schumaker, her brother-in-law Jim Williams and his wife Ardy Williams, sister-in-law Janet (Williams) Buser and her husband Henry Buser, her daughter Jennifer (Williams) Miller and her husband Scott Miller, her daughter Kristine (Williams) Wanamaker and her husband Taylor Wanamaker, grandchildren Margo Miller, Jacob Lamper, Morgan Lamper, Stephen Lamper, Jax Wanamaker, Daphne Wanamaker, great granddaughter Abbey Lamper, and many nieces and nephews. A joint celebration of life for both Eleen and Stephen will take place in the next few months. We will notify friends and family and post an open invitation on the Fair Haven facebook page.   Becker-Keysor Funeral Home, Red Creek, is in care of the arrangements.
