Obituary

Carmen Pascarella Jr, 91, formerly of Penfield and North Rose, NY, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Carmen was born at home in Bradford, PA on November 21, 1934. He was the third of seven children, born to Carmen Pascarella Sr and Elvira (Alviti) Pascarella, members of a proud and close-knit Italian family.

He graduated from St Bernard’s School in Bradford in 1953 after twelve years of Catholic education. During his school years, he served as an altar boy, and played football and basketball. Inspired by the influential Sisters and coaches in his life, Carmen developed a love of teaching that would shape his future. A particular cherished reminder of his faith was the rosary given to him by Father Grady which remained in his pocket until his passing.

In 1954, Carmen was drafted into the US Army where he served for 2 years with the 594th Field Battalion in Giessen, Germany. He was a driver of the 155 Howitzer, one of the largest artillery pieces of its time. He also played football for the Temporary Duty Division Team (TDY).

Following his honorable discharge, Carmen attended Mansfield State Teachers’ College from 1957-1961. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education, and earned varsity letters in football for 4 years, golf for 2 years. He was also a member of both the “M” Club and the Newman Club.

While in college, Carmen met the love of his life, Margaret DiFonzo, at a social dance in Bradford. They married in 1958, and eventually made their home in North Rose, NY in 1961. Here, they raised their two children, Carmen “Nuch” and Tammy, their true devotions.

From 1961 to 1990, Carmen taught high school History and coached in the North Rose-Wolcott School District. Throughout those 29 years, his dedication to teaching, leadership, and coaching touched the lives of countless students and families. He coached Varsity Baseball, JV Basketball, Bowling, Girls’ Softball, Cross Country, and officiated Soccer. In recognition of his many contributions to athletics, Carmen was inducted into the North Rose Wolcott Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2007. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and playing fields. To this day, many fondly continue to call him “Coach.” Carmen was dearly loved by generations of “students,” who he affectionately called “his kids.” Many remained close friends until his passing.

Carmen was also deeply involved in public service and local government. He served on the Rose Town Council from 1974-1990, then went on to serve as Rose Town Supervisor and a member of the County Legislature from 1991-2005. During that time, he also served as Chairman of the Wayne County Democratic Party for 12 years. His leadership and commitment to his community were evident throughout his years of service. After his first year as Supervisor, he ran unopposed, reflecting the confidence and support he had earned.

Carmen was a Veteran, recognized for his distinguished service. Most notably, in 2013, he was sponsored by Senator Mike Nozzolio, and inducted into the NY State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame. He worked closely with the Senator as a founding member of the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery Board of Directors. Carmen devoted considerable time to establish this new veterans’ cemetery. In recognition of his service, the Senator described him as a “man of integrity, dedication, and ability, with outstanding commitment to country and veterans.” A proud and active veteran, Carmen maintained membership in the North Rose American Legion, and the Clyde VFW.

Carmen’s commitment to his community extended to numerous other organizations. He had been a member of the North Rose Volunteer Fire Department since 1964 and belonged to the Wolcott Elks Club for 48 years. He also served as a founding committee member for Marshall Park. In addition, he was a member of Wayne Hills CC for 47 years, serving as a Board Member for 23 of those years.

Throughout his life, Carmen remained connected to his faith and church community. He had been a member of St Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, in Clyde, NY since 1961. He returned for his final requiem mass on October 28, 2026. Father Chumo, a dear friend, who Carmen and Margaret regarded as akin to an adopted son, will celebrate the mass.

Carmen had many interests and passions. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He also cheered on his favorite teams, the New York Yankees and Notre Dame’s football. These passions provided valued time with friends and family. To further promote that, he founded the Fishing Club with his granddaughters, Meghan and Emma. With Carmen/“Papa” serving as President & CEO, and Margaret/”Nona” driving the golf cart, they would all head to Wayne Hills CC ponds to fish, creating treasured memories. To carry on the beloved tradition, Papa bequeathed his fishing equipment to his great- grandson, Luca.

Just shy of 92, Carmen lived a long and distinguished life devoted to serving others-- his church, school, country, community, and, most especially, his family. His memory and legacy will live on in the hearts and stories of all who knew, admired, and loved him. He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but mostly for the countless lives he touched and the enduring friendships he cultivated. In his own words, a simple yet profound reflection on a life well lived; “I had a good life.”

Carmen lost the love of his life, Margaret, in May, after 67 years of marriage. Their life was a testament to enduring love and partnership.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren; son, Carmen (Elizabeth) Pascarella III; daughter, Tammy Baker; grandchildren, Meghan (Joe) Ward; Emma Pascarella; and great-grandson Luca Ward.

He is also survived by his brother James Eugene Pascarella; his sisters, Rose (Pascarella) Piganelli and JoAnne (Pascarella) Simon; his sisters-in-law MaryAnn (Pias) Pascarella and Patricia (Fox) Pascarella; plus many nieces and nephews.
